How to open a bank account in Belgium as an international student?
Erasmus students often ask us how and where it is possible to easily open a Belgian bank account for their period of stay in the country. Therefore, we decided to do some research and share it with you guys. According to us, the best bank account option for Erasmus and international students in Belgium is the “Hello4You” bank account, by BNP Paribas Fortis.
Why is the “Hello4You” bank account interesting for international students?
First of all, the “Hello4You” bank account is FREE for every subscriber that is under 28 years old! It includes a regular debit card and an access to the online “Easy Banking” platform of BNP Paribas. If it is needed, you can also order a prepaid MasterCard in order to purchase anything you like online.
What documents do you need to open this bank account?
Here is the list of documents you will have to provide:
– Valid ID documents: your ID-card or your passport, with your student Visa (if applicable to you) ;
– A proof of your Belgian address: your lease agreement or a copy of your residence permit ;
– A proof of enrolment in a local school or university.
Where can you open the bank account?
You just need to go to one of the BNP Paribas Fortis agencies in the city. The closest to the city center are located Place Xavier Neujean 8 – 10, 4000 Liège and Rue des Prémontrés 4, 4000 Liège. However, you can find the full list of agencies here
If the bank adviser at the counter has time, he or she will deal with your request immediately. If not, you will have to make an appointment for another time. This appointment might take up to 30 minutes and can be done only in French or in English.
How do you close your bank account?
Before you go back home, you have to make another appointment at the same agency where you opened your bank account. You will have to sign several documents in order to cancel your bank account. The appointment might take up to 10 minutes and can be done only in French or in English.
